table talk
YOU SEE….
I never would have imagined myself buying a dinning table let alone building one. A formal dining area was just never used when it was Kay and I. I remember having this sleek breakfast sized Dinning table in my first apartment after college and then moved it with me when I bought my first house, but I never really used it. I mean I had dinner here and there when entertaining, but it was mostly Kay and I so we found ourselves eating in bed , the couch, or on the floor. As my life transitioned a dining table ... let alone a dining area didn’t seem necessary.
My single -minimalist approach...found a dining table to be a waste of space and money so I spent the last 5 years without having one. Dinners at home were very casual and blended with phone scrolls, home work, or tv watching. I assumed it was the “millennial norm”.
Fast forward to today , in a new space and a relationship…. my life has taken a major turn. When Chris and I decided to blend our lives abruptly.. home cooked meals and dinner became the new norm. Chris had this massive round wood dining table that I despised and could not understand for the life of me why he had it in his Bach pad. However, that round table birthed a new tradition for our little family and that’s where we began to spend our evenings over dinner or a board game . No phones were allowed…just grace , food and daily conversation.
I was eager to build a new table for our new space .. and though Chris was not originally on board.. he was excited about the end result. Something that I thought was soo unnecessary and a waste of money turned out to be a place where we spend a great deal of quality time.
Though at the time it made economical sense to not waste my money on a space I didn’t use.. I can’t help but to feel I may have cheated myself and Kayden from the tradition of “dinner time”. I did not use that space because I didn’t see the value beyond the buck.
Building this table was so rewarding .. we saved the Buck and added the value!
