CURATING A SHOPPABLE CLOSET.

Spring is right around the corner, and I know y’all are eyeing the spring trends and already got those links and saved carts…. but what if we stepped back before investing in new pieces… and instead use those coins towards elevating your closet space. HEAR ME OUT SIS!

So heres the tea …. When I really streamlined my wardrobe and made my closet look more like a boutique… getting dressed became more of a romanticized ritual. My closet became my favorite place to be in and provided a sense of comfort and ease. Picking out outfits became effortless, which encouraged me to shop my closet first and to most importantly keep it clean.

Today I want to share five of my favorite tips on how to curate and keep an organized closet that will expand your wardrobe, creativity , and that will encourage you to shop your closet first.

THIS BLOG POST CONTAINS AFFILIATE LINKS TO SOME OF MY FAVORITE HOME AND ORGANIZATIONAL FINDS. YOUR PURCHASES WILL PROVIDE ME A SMALL COMMISSION THAT HELPS TO SUPPORT MY PLATFORM. LINKS PROVIDED ARE ITEMS I HAVE USED OR GENUINELY RECOMMEND.

AND AS ALWAYS, PICK UP WHAT YOU NEED, AND PUT BACK THE REST.

1.EVERYTHING NEEDS A HOME

So lets just say we have already done our closet detox and have a clear idea of what our wardrobe inventory looks like… we now must have a plan for where EVERYTHING will go. Knowing what you want to display and what you rather not see. Now let me back up and say…. we are working with WHAT WE GOT in this phase…. so if you have a small closet Im still talking to you too. (I have had them all sizes and made all of them work)

Whether you have shoe boxes, a shoe display, jewelry , or bags galore… they all need a place to call home.  Every item in your closet should be stored away … this not only keeps your items fresh and protected, but there’s no deep sea diving to find whatever item you are looking for.l

2. YOU GOTTA SEE YOUR CLOTHES

If you have to go high and low to find an item in your closet or have to use full force to shove your hangers to the side….. Its giving the clearance section sis and it’s time to let something’s go!

You should always be able to see each item in your wardrobe, excluding seasonal items you may have stored away.  Having an eyes view of your wardrobe allows you to put outfits together without having to necessarily put them on. When I pick out my clothes for the week I rarely ever have to try outfits on and it usually takes me less than 10 min. (EVERYTHING IS SEE-ABLE)

I like to keep proper spacing between each hung garment ( pictured above) to ensure it has breathing room. You spend your hard earned money on your wardrobe… they all deserve to be seen and worn.

3.FIND YOUR COORDINATES

Either organize your wardrobe by clothing items , color , and or both. I always say place the in season items that you use the most where you will see them first when you walk in or open your closet. The items that are the most functional should be quickly accessible.

*My personal rule of thumb is work your way from left to right. This may also vary based on the design of your closet ).

Quite frankly you can organize your closet in a way that makes the most sense for you , but I highly encourage that you find a system that aligns with your typical dressing habits.

4.USE WHAT YOU GOT!

Hopefully you're still reading and excited to get a head start on your spring cleaning… but hold on sis…. before you start racking up the amazon cart… Be sure to check what you may have lying around your house or whats already in your closet that you can use for storage, or even as decor.

When I decided I wanted my closet to still have a boutique feel I fantasized about adding all these trinkets and gadgets that would elevate my closet aesthetics … but my inner voice and my financial goals told me to sit down and start with what I already had.

I started with my shoe boxes using them as risers and storage. My closet colors are neutral so having white and black shoe boxes made it easy for me to utilize them as risers, displays ,and storage.

*( you can also spray paint, or use decorative wrapping paper to make your existing shoe boxes work to match your color/design scheme)

. As much as the Container Store and Ikea got the fashion enthusiants in a chokehold…. I had to come to the realization that … it was an investment that didn’t make sense for my life nor my wallet, and really wasn’t necessary given that I had adequate enough space to accommodate my wardrobe.

5. THE ADD ONS AND UPGRADES

So I saved the fun for last….. and with much intention, because before we can make the closet pretty… we need to make it functional. The way we take pride in the care and curation of our home… should also be extended to our closets. I promise ,you will think differently about the way you get dressed.

Here we get to imagine our dream closets, recreate our favorite clothing store design, or simple just add what you need to elevate the overall aesthetic.

One of the things I did in my last closet was add peel and stick wall paper… but unfortunately it was not the best quality and finish. I plan to revisit this idea again when I do a closet refresh.

WHAT I ADDED!

Diy floating rack

I added a diy floating clothing rack to house my outfits for the week, more floating shelves to showcase my shoes, a purse stand to highlight my favorite handbag, and a cute manequin to hold my favorite hat, and puck lights.

WHERE SHOULD YOU START?

You may not be able to add all the fancy containers , jewelry island , and all the pretty displays, but you can start with switching out your hangers.

If you’re still using mismatch colored hangers or the hangers from the cleaners… SIS I AM JUDGING YOU!!!.

You would be surprised by how many closets I have purged in the the past and they were using wire hangers. I always died a little on the inside…lol.

I COULD GO ON A RANT ABOUT HANGERS BUT YOU GET MY POINT.

Add or elevate the lighting.Take it from me… if you do lights in your closet… either get them installed professionally or if on a budget, get the rechargeable strip lights. The battery puck lights are a pain.

Another budget friendly and simple way to elevate your lighting is to just start with changing the bulb or for some of you adding a light fixture to the space.

Add Shelving. This is a great way to bring the eye up and create more space for storing shoes, handbags, parfumes, etc. This is pretty standard for me no matter where I move.

There are so many ways that you can completely elevate and transform your closet without breaking the bank, and I hope this inspired you to do so.. I would love to know if this was helpful in any way or if you plans to tryi it out. Even better if you would share your pics with me via email or on the gram.

If I had to walk away from doing hair today…. I would definitely be a Closet Designer!
